History of Meditation

History of Meditation

Meditation dates back over 5,000 years, originating in India and mentioned in Hindu Vedas (1500 BCE). Around 500 BCE, Buddha developed meditation as a key practice in Buddhism, spreading it across Asia. China and Japan later adopted meditation through Daoism and Zen practices.

Christian monks practiced contemplative prayer during the Middle Ages, while Sufi Islam developed dhikr (remembrance meditation). In the 19th and 20th centuries, Indian spiritual leaders like Swami Vivekananda introduced meditation to the West.

The 1960s-70s saw a global rise in interest, led by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Meditation and Buddhist mindfulness teachings. By the 21st century, meditation had become mainstream, with scientific research supporting its mental and physical benefits, leading to apps, workplace programs, and widespread secular adoption.
